May 24 in the pages of history: Peru's football tragedy, which shudders the soul.

In the history of the country and the world, the date of May 24 is recorded for many good and bad news. This date is remembered as the worst tragedy in the history of football. The date was 24 May 1964 and the place was the National Stadium of Lima, the capital of Peru. A match was taking place here between the football teams of Peru and Argentina. The winner of this match was to get a chance to play in the Olympics to be held in Tokyo. It was a do or die match for both the teams. The Peruvian team was at second place in the points table and two matches were left. To qualify for the Olympics, Peru had to at least draw this match.

There were about 50 thousand spectators sitting in the stadium. This was Peru's home ground, but Argentina had taken an early lead of 1-0. There were about six minutes left for the match to end. Peru had to score a goal at any cost. Peru's Kilo Lobaton scored a goal, the ball also hit the net but the match referee called it a foul and refused to award the goal. After this, the angry spectators started creating a ruckus in the stadium. People ran to beat the referee. The police caught hold of a spectator and beat him badly, which further fuelled the anger. The police fired tear gas shells. Fires broke out in the stadium. Hundreds of people died after being crushed under the feet of the crowd. According to official figures, 328 people died, but the actual number of deaths was much higher than this. National mourning was declared in Peru for the next seven days.
