New Delhi, 29 October (Hindustan Reporter). Matthew Wade has announced his retirement from international cricket and will immediately take up a coaching role with Australia for the T20 series against Pakistan next month.
Wade was part of Australia's squad for the T20 World Cup in June and after being overlooked for the UK tour in September, it was expected that this tournament would be the end of his international career. In March he retired from red-ball cricket following Tasmania's victory in the Sheffield Shield final.
Wade will continue to play in the BBL for the Hobart Hurricanes and some franchise tournaments around the world. He will also now work with Australia's youth T20 team, coached by Andre Borowec, while Andrew McDonald and his other assistants prepare for the Test series against India. Wade will also spend time with Australia's coaching group in an unofficial capacity during the ODI series.
“I was fully aware that my international days were probably over after the last T20 World Cup,” Wade was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia (CA). George in the last six months [बेली] andrew [मैकडोनाल्ड] I have been in constant conversation with him about my international retirement and coaching. “Coaching has been on my radar for the past few years and thankfully I have had some great opportunities for which I am very grateful and excited.”
Overall, Wade played 36 Tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20 matches for Australia between 2011 and 2024. He was a key figure in their T20 World Cup title in the UAE in 2021, where he became the finisher in the semi-final against Pakistan with an unbeaten 41 off 17 balls.
He said, “As my international career comes to an end, I would like to thank all my Australian teammates, staff and coaches. I enjoyed the challenging journey at the international level. Without good people around me I would not have been able to accomplish as much as I did on my own. I also thank my family, mother, father and sisters, who put in countless hours over the years to get me into sports and training. Finally, thanks to Julia and the children also. I can't thank them enough for the sacrifices they made to make my dreams come true. “Words cannot express how grateful I am to them, without their support all this would not have been possible.”
Wade's Test career ended during the last tour of India in 2021, after he made a successful return to the team as a specialist batsman for the 2019 Ashes, where he scored two centuries. His last ODI also came in 2021, when he returned to the team after a gap of four years during the tour of West Indies during the Covid period.
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said, “Congratulations to Matthew on an outstanding international career, during which his skills and versatility have made him an outstanding performer across all formats. I am delighted that he will add to his huge contribution by coaching the next generation of stars and shining in the Big Bash with the Hobart Hurricanes.”
