22-year-old swimmer Leon Marchand of the host country of the Paris Olympics performed sensationally in the swimming pool, winning four gold medals in a span of three days, taking France to the top-5 in the medal list. Marchand won gold medals in 400 m individual medley, 200 m butterfly, 200 m backstroke and 200 m individual medley at the Paris Games.

With this, Marchand also equaled the record of American legendary swimmer Michael Phelps. Phelps won four individual gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Marchand started his golden campaign with a time of four minutes 02.95 seconds in the 400 meter individual medley. He set a new Olympic record by taking two minutes 05.85 seconds in the 200 meter breaststroke.

Interestingly, Marchand's father, Xavier, represented France at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Games. Xavier finished eighth in the 200m individual medley in Atlanta and seventh in Sydney. Marchand's mother, Celine, competed in four events at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and finished 14th in the 200m individual medley.
