Many people undergo hair straightening treatment to get shiny and straight hair, but do you know that this beauty can pose a serious threat to you? Yes, research conducted a few months ago has shown that the chemicals used in hair straightening can cause cancer. A few months ago, the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) proposed a ban on the use of formaldehyde and other formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in hair smoothing and straightening products. Doctors in India have also supported this move.
According to Dr Pragya Shukla, clinical oncologist at Delhi State Cancer Institute, formaldehyde is a carcinogen. It is associated with an increased risk of nasopharyngeal and sinonasal cancers as well as leukemia. Formaldehyde is widely used in hair straightening chemicals in India. People inhale the fumes released during the treatment, increasing the risk of cancer with repeated use.
Studies have shown that receiving such treatments for more than 15 years and at least five times a year can increase the risk of uterine and breast cancer. Although these alone cannot cause cancer, they can be easily prevented, so it is wise to avoid these treatments.
Dr. Sajjan Rajpurohit, Senior Director of Medical Oncology, BLK Super Specialty Hospital, also expresses concern on this issue. He says that initially these chemicals can cause problems like irritation in the eyes, nose-throat discomfort and difficulty in breathing, but their long-term use increases the risk of breast and uterine cancer. Strict regulation is needed to reduce these risks.
Why is formaldehyde dangerous?
Formaldehyde is a very toxic chemical. It is considered a carcinogen. It can enter the body not only through breathing but also through skin contact.
