In response to Ratidev's question, Yamraj told that he had once sent a priest from his house on an empty stomach, due to which he was being taken to hell. Ratidev prayed to Yamraj and pleaded for another life. Yamraj accepted his request and gave Ratidev his life back. After receiving the gift of life, Ratidev met the sages and saints and asked them about the solution to avoid going to hell. The sages and saints advised Maharaj to keep a fast on the day of Narak Chaturdashi and feed the hungry priest. Ratidev followed the advice of the sages, as a result of which he attained heaven instead of hell.

On the day of Kali Chaudash, a lamp is also lit to Yamraj, which is called Yamdeepak. No one knows when death will occur, but the person lights a lamp and prays to Yamraj that he does not die untimely. Thus, there are many other myths associated with the day of Kali Chaudash.

Story of killing Narakasura

According to a legend, a demon named Narakasura started troubling the gods. Narakasura had supernatural powers, so no one could fight him. As Narakasura's pain increased, all the gods went to Lord Krishna. Seeing the condition of the gods, Shri Krishna agreed to help them. According to another story, Narakasura had imprisoned sixteen thousand girls. Lord Shri Krishna freed Narakasura by killing him on this day i.e. Kali Chaudash. According to another story, Narakasura had a boon from Brahma that he would die only at the hands of a woman, so Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna along with his wife Satyabhama. Therefore this day is also called Narak Chaturdashi or Narak Chaturdashi. Worried that no one would accept these girls, Lord Krishna married them all to give them social status. Thus, Lord Shri Krishna is considered to have 16,108 wives. It is said that by taking bath during Pratyush period before sunrise on the day of Kali Chaudash, one does not have to see Yamlok.
