Yesterday the temperature crossed 40 degrees Celsius in various parts of Karnataka, Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heat wave warning in these states for the next two days.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 41.5 degrees Celsius in Bhuj, 41.1 degrees Celsius in Rajkot, 41.5 degrees Celsius in Akola and 41.4 degrees Celsius in Washim.
According to an official of the Indian Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in these states today was recorded two to three degrees above normal.
The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning if the temperature is 4 to 4.5 degrees above normal and the temperature is 40 degrees in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas and above 30 degrees in the hilly areas.
IMD has said in a statement that there is a possibility of heat wave in the interior areas of North Karnataka from March 27 to 29. There is a possibility of heat wave in Kutch and Saurashtra of Gujarat and South West Rajasthan on 27 to 28 March.
From 27 to 29 March, night temperatures will also be above normal in Gujarat, Marathawad and Central Maharashtra.
Konkan, Goa will have hot and humid weather during March 27 to 28. Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Karel and Mahe will experience hot and humid weather from March 27 to 31.
IMD had earlier predicted that India will see more heat and heat waves this year as the effect of El Nino will continue till May.
The number of heat wave days will be above normal from March to May in most parts of the country except the North East, Western Himalayan region, South Western Peninsula and Western coastal areas.
Due to climate change, the temperature has crossed 40 degrees even in the last days of March. In the 1970s, temperatures of 40 degrees in March were very low.
According to scientists of America-based Climate Central, the number of states with temperatures above 40 degrees has increased to 9 in the month of March. The 9 states include Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
