Colombo: Unusual rainfall in Sri Lanka has caused massive flooding in every river including its northernmost river, the Mahawela-Ganga, leading to closure of schools in all cities including the capital Colombo and its suburbs. Almost all areas of the country have been submerged. Countless houses and fields have been submerged. Roads have turned into rivers.
So far, 3 people have died due to floods. But officials fear that this number will increase significantly.
More than 1 lakh 34 thousand people have been displaced due to this flood. The government is trying to take them to a safe place. Food packets are also being delivered to them. About 7 thousand people have been evacuated from 240 houses that were damaged in Colombo. The government has stopped the flow of electricity. So that no one gets shocked.
According to the Sri Lanka Meteorological Department, Western Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Upper Provinces such as Galle and Manara districts received rainfall of more than 100 mm. Navy and Army personnel have started rescuing the victims. They have been provided food etc. TV. According to the condition of the canals, water has reached the roofs of houses and shops. The rainy season which started from May is still continuing there. There was unusual rainfall in June also. There were 16 deaths at that time.
As per available information, the Government of India is monitoring the situation and the Central Disaster Response Force has been deployed to assist Sri Lanka if needed.
