Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has expressed deep regret over the violent incidents that took place in the state during 2023 and 2024 and has apologized to the public. Accepting his responsibility for these unfortunate events, he said, “I am deeply sorry for whatever happened from May 3, 2023 till now. I apologize to all the people of the state.” The Chief Minister also said that these incidents devastated hundreds of families, many lost their loved ones and thousands were forced to leave their homes.
Appeal for a new beginning with sadness and regrets
Chief Minister Biren Singh expressed deep condolences regarding these incidents. He said, “Last year was very unfortunate for Manipur. But we have to leave the past behind and look towards a new beginning.” He appealed for peace and unity from all communities in the state. The Chief Minister said, “We all must work together for a peaceful and prosperous Manipur. We have to forget the mistakes of the past and move towards a better future.”
Chief Minister’s statement on progress in restoration of peace
The Chief Minister said that in the last few months, significant progress has been made in the efforts to restore peace in the state. He expressed hope that with the arrival of 2025, Manipur will completely return to normalcy. He said, “The path to peace is possible only through dialogue and discussion, and the central government has taken initiative in this direction. The situation in the state is better than before, and we are moving in a positive direction.”
Violence statistics and government action
The Chief Minister presented statistics regarding violent incidents starting from May 3, 2023. He said:
- Death toll: More than 200 people died.
- FIR: A total of 12,247 FIRs were registered.
- Arrest: 625 accused were arrested.
- Weapons seizures: Over 5,600 weapons and 35,000 rounds of ammunition were seized.
The Chief Minister also discussed the steps taken by the Central Government to provide assistance to the displaced families. He said, “The central government has provided adequate security forces and funds. Along with this, the process of building new houses for the displaced people has also started.”
2024: A year of conflict and tension
The year 2024 was full of deep turmoil for Manipur. Clashes escalated between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state, dividing the valley and mountain regions. During:

- Incidents of drone strikes and mob attacks were reported in civilian areas.
- Thousands of people were displaced and forced to leave their homes.

Referring to the cultural heritage of Manipur, Chief Minister Biren Singh said that the state needs to return to peace and unity. He said, “Manipur has always cherished the spirit of unity in its diversity. We have to work together to bring it back.”
