Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has apologized to the public for the caste violence that took place in the state on May 3 last year. More than 250 people lost their lives in this violence and thousands were rendered homeless. Congress has now taken Prime Minister Narendra Modi to task over this statement of the Chief Minister. Congress raised the question that why has Prime Minister Modi not visited Manipur yet?

Jairam Ramesh’s question: Why is the Prime Minister silent?

Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh launched a scathing attack on X (formerly Twitter) while sharing the video of Chief Minister Biren Singh’s apology statement. they wrote,
“Prime Minister Modi keeps traveling across the country and the world. But why can’t you go to Manipur and apologize to the people there, as Chief Minister Biren Singh has done?

Ramesh said,
“The Prime Minister has avoided visiting Manipur after May 4, 2023. The people of Manipur are not able to understand this neglect.”

Statement of Chief Minister Biren Singh

Chief Minister Biren Singh expressed regret for the caste conflict in the state at a public event on Tuesday. He said,
“I apologize for what happened. Many people lost their loved ones and many became homeless from their homes. “The situation has become peaceful in the last three-four months and I am hopeful that normalcy will be restored in the coming time.”

he adds,
“I appeal to all communities to forgive and forget their past mistakes. Let us start a new life together in a peaceful and prosperous Manipur.”

Why does Congress attack PM?

The Congress party described the Chief Minister’s move of apologizing as positive, but at the same time raised questions on the Prime Minister’s silence. Congress alleges that the Prime Minister continues to remain silent on the ongoing crisis in Manipur, while it is a matter of grave concern for the country.
Congress also says that the Prime Minister not visiting Manipur is like rubbing salt on the wounds of those who have lost their family members in this violence.

Manipur violence: a look

  • Beginning of events: On 3 May 2023, caste violence broke out in Manipur.
  • Damage assessment: More than 250 people died and thousands were left homeless.
  • Current Situation: The situation has been peaceful in the last few months, but the tension has not completely ended yet.

Government response and challenge

Chief Minister Biren Singh has appealed for peace and unity with his apology, but the move is yet to be seen as a permanent solution. There is a need to take concrete steps to deal with social and political instability in the state.

The allegations made by Congress against Prime Minister Modi are making this issue more serious. It will be important to see what steps the Central Government takes to normalize the situation in Manipur.

Manipur needs stability

Restoring peace in Manipur should be the priority of the government. The Chief Minister’s apology is a positive initiative, but going beyond this, the state and central governments will have to work together. The people of Manipur need security, rehabilitation and trust.
