Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday indicated that his government may consider India's request for the extradition of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik if it provides evidence against him. Speaking at a session at the Indian Council of World Affairs, Ibrahim also said the issue should not be a hindrance to expanding bilateral ties between the two countries. Responding to a specific question, he said the Indian side did not raise the issue during Tuesday's talks.
This issue was not raised by India
Malaysian Prime Minister Ibrahim further said that first of all, this issue was not raised by India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised this issue many years ago. But the point is that I am not talking about any one person. I am talking about the spirit of extremism. We are talking about a compelling case and evidence that indicates atrocities committed by a person, group or party. Which proves a serious crime committed by a person, group or parties.
We will not encourage terrorism
The Malaysian Prime Minister said he was ready to consider any request and evidence provided. “We will not promote terrorism. Our stand on this is clear and we are working with India on many of these issues against terrorism. But I don't think we should stop further cooperation and our bilateral relations because of this one issue,” he said.
What is the allegation against Zakir Naik?
Zakir Naik is accused of giving inflammatory speeches, money laundering and promoting terrorism in India. In May 2019, the ED filed a chargesheet against Zakir Naik in the terror funding case. The chargesheet states that the agency has so far identified assets worth Rs 193 crore, out of which more than Rs 50 crore has been seized.
ED claims Zakir Naik received funding from dubious sources
The ED claimed that between 2003-04 and 2016-17, Zakir Naik received funding of Rs 64 crore from unknown and suspicious sources. Most of this money was used to organise 'peace conferences'. The agency also said that Zakir Naik also received Rs 49.20 crore from 2012 to 2016. This amount was transferred to Naik's UAE bank account.
NIA also filed chargesheet
Earlier in October 2017, the NIA had filed a chargesheet. In the chargesheet, the NIA has accused Zakir Naik of giving provocative speeches and instigating the youth. It was said in the chargesheet that the youth are getting influenced by watching Zakir Naik's videos and some of them are also joining terrorist organizations. Overall, Zakir Naik is accused of promoting radicalism.
