Recipe of Dal Khichdi in Gujarati

Ingredients for making lentil khichdi

  • 1 cup masoor dal
  • 1 cup white or brown rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 4 chopped garlic cloves
  • 1 inch grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • salt to taste
  • Turmeric
  • chilli powder
  • spices like garam masala
  • optional: Vegetables like carrots, peas, or potatoes

How to make Lentil Khichdi

  • – Wash lentils and rice together and soak them in water for 30 minutes. Then drain the water from it.
  • Heat ghee or oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion, minced garlic and grated ginger. Saute until onion is translucent.
  • Add coriander and cumin seeds and fry for a minute.
  • Add the soaked lentils and rice to the vessel and mix well.
  • Add 4 cups water and boil.
  • Reduce the flame, cover and let it cook on low flame for 20-25 minutes or until the dal and rice are cooked.
  • Add salt to taste and any optional vegetables or spices you like and cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Add chopped coriander and serve hot with ghee.
