Maharashtra local body elections: As the results of Maharashtra local body elections were declared on Sunday, the grand alliance of BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena won a landslide victory. Everyone’s eyes were on these local body elections, held after a gap of almost a decade.

Maharashtra local body elections: key points

1- Final Result

The Mahayuti alliance won a landslide victory in the elections of 288 city councils and nagar panchayats and captured 207 posts of chairpersons in local bodies. At the same time, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) got only 44 seats in total.

Meanwhile, according to the State Election Commission (SEC), the BJP won 117 posts of municipal corporation chairpersons, Shiv Sena 53 and NCP 37. Congress got 28 posts, NCP (SP) seven and Shiv Sena (UBT) nine.

According to reports, BJP has emerged as the largest party in the elections with 117 seats.

2- Allegation made by MVA against ECI

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harsh Vardhan Sapkal on Sunday alleged that the victory of the ruling Mahayuti alliance was possible only with the “blessings” and support of the Election Commission (EC), IANS reported.

Highlighting the “disorganized administration” of the Election Commission, Sapkal told journalists that the elections were far from being “free and fair”, and claimed that the ruling Mahayuti alliance adopted a strategy of “sama, dana, danda, bheda” (explain, compensate, punish and divide) to ensure its victory.

3- Sarcasm of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde

The Mahayuti alliance won a landslide victory in the local body elections by winning over 200 seats across the state, following which Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde celebrated the victory by highlighting that his party, Shiv Sena, had secured 50 seats.

According to ANI, he said, “BJP scored a century and Shiv Sena a half-century. Some people used to say that Shiv Sena is limited to Thane only, but now it has spread from Chandrapur to Bandra (all over Maharashtra). I am grateful to all our elected representatives, ministers and MLAs. Thank you to my dear brothers and sisters and congratulations to all the party workers. I also congratulate Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis; BJP has also achieved great success.”

He said that the results have proved that only the court of public opinion tells who Shiv Sena actually belongs to.

4- Pune results

Elections were held for around 17 local bodies in Pune district, in which Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 10 president posts, Shiv Sena 4 posts and BJP 3 posts.

5- Campaign

According to IANS, the opposition was expected to put up a tough challenge in view of the agrarian crisis in many parts of Maharashtra, partial distribution of benefits under the government’s flagship welfare scheme for women and complaints by farmers of inadequate financial support. However, there was a clear lack of intent and coordination among the opposition parties during the election campaign.

Congress leaders campaigned aggressively in Vidarbha and Marathwada, but Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders were almost absent at the grassroots level, while NCP (SP) leaders remained confined to their respective constituencies.

The period leading up to the elections was also filled with internal strife within the Mahayuti alliance, with alliance partners pitting against each other in several areas.

It is noteworthy that the trends of Maharashtra local body elections come almost a year after the Mahayuti Party won a landslide victory in the 2024 assembly elections.

Experts believe that the outcome of these local body elections is politically important, especially in view of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections fast approaching.
