Maharashtra's 'Joshi Sir' is no more, last rites will be performed this evening, farewell with state honors – News India Live

Mumbai, 23 February (HS). Former Chief Minister of the state and former Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi (86), known as 'Joshi Sir' throughout Maharashtra and in political circles, died at Hinduja Hospital in Mahim at around 3 am today (Friday). He was admitted here after suffering a heart attack on Thursday evening. The last rites of 'Joshi Sir' will be performed with full state honors in the evening.

In May last year also, he was admitted to the same hospital due to health reasons. A few days later, it was discovered that he had a brain tumor. At that time he had defeated the disease. Joshi's mortal remains will be kept at his residence today. After this, the last rites will be performed with state honors at the cremation ground located at Shivaji Park.

Manohar Joshi was born on December 2, 1937 in a middle-class family in Nandvi village of Raigarh district. He received education in Mumbai. After completing his studies, he worked for some time in Mumbai Municipal Corporation. After some time Balasaheb joined Shiv Sena under the leadership of Thackeray. He remained close to Thackeray.

He was the Mayor of Mumbai from 1976 to 1977. Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi was the Chief Minister for four years (1995–1999). The party won power in Maharashtra for the first time in alliance with the BJP. He served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha (2002–2004) during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He became the second person from the state to hold this prestigious post after Congress's Shivraj Patil (1991–1996). Joshi has been an MP from Mumbai Central parliamentary seat. He has also served as a Rajya Sabha member for six years. Due to poor health, he was away from Maharashtra politics for some time.
