The soul-shattering incident that took place on Wednesday morning in Gomti Nagar extension, a posh and high-security area of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has created a stir in the entire state regarding law and order and women’s safety. In front of Gate No. 4 of Janeshwar Mishra Park, amidst the morning walk and sipping of tea, suddenly there was an outcry when a girl hanging on the bonnet of an uncontrolled white car was dragged at high speed for about 100 meters. In the viral video, it can be clearly seen that the girl is pleading to save her life by holding the wiper of the car tightly, whereas instead of reducing the speed of the car, the driver accelerates it further. Eyewitnesses and morning walkers present nearby threw stones and made noise to stop the car, but the driver suddenly hit the brakes, knocked the girl down and fled from the spot while driving the car with the intention of crushing her. The seriously injured girl was immediately admitted to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences with the help of local police and family members, where after first aid, her condition was declared stable.
Initially, it was being considered as a normal road accident or a case of hit and run after a minor dispute, but the incident took a major turn when the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission took suo motu cognizance of this entire episode. State Women’s Commission Vice Chairman Aparna Yadav not only met the victim girl and heard her entire ordeal, but also directly contacted top officials of Lucknow Police Commissionerate and directed them to get to the bottom of the matter and take action under strict sections. While interacting with the media, Aparna Yadav said in blunt words that this is not just a road accident or a case of careless driving, but a well-planned and deep conspiracy is visible behind it. In this entire incident, Aparna Yadav has completely changed the direction of the police investigation by expressing serious suspicion of ‘love jihad’ and trapping innocent girls by hiding their identity.
According to the facts revealed before the Women’s Commission and after the incident, the main accused has been identified as building contractor Shahnawaz Ali, resident of Andhe Ki Chowki area of Dubagga. The victim is originally from Hardoi district and is working in a private company while living in a rented house in Gomti Nagar. According to the statements of Aparna Yadav and the victim, accused Shahnawaz had initially completely hidden his real religious identity. Calling himself ‘Yash Thakur’, he befriended a girl with Hindu identity and lured her into his love trap. When the girl came to know of his true identity, she tried to distance herself from the relationship. It is alleged that Shahnawaz was constantly putting mental pressure on her to marry and convert to religion. On the day of the incident, the victim had gone to have tea with her aunt and sister, where she saw Shahnawaz in a car with another girl and his partner Danish, following which the dispute took the form of a fatal attack.
After the viral video and intervention of higher officials, Lucknow Police immediately swung into action. Taking immediate action, the police of Gomti Nagar extension police station arrested the main accused Shahnawaz Ali and took the car used in the crime into their custody. While giving the information, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Dr. Deeksha Sharma clarified that on the basis of the written complaint of the victim, a case has been registered under section 109 (attempt to murder) and section 352 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and other serious and non-bailable sections. According to the police, the word love jihad was not directly mentioned in the initial complaint, but fresh statements of the victim are being recorded. Special police teams are continuously conducting raids to investigate the role of absconding accomplice Danish and other people present in the car at the time of the incident. The forensic team has also collected evidence from the incident site and the seized vehicle.
Vice President of Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission, Aparna Yadav, gave a blunt warning and said that women’s safety is the top priority in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He said that if any anti-social element conspires to mislead our daughters and ruin their lives by changing their identity and using a fake name, then the state police and law and order will give him such a ‘treatment’ that will set an example. He has instructed the police administration to thoroughly investigate the case not only of attempt to murder but also of fraud, making fake identity cards and under the Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act.
