Anti-corruption body Lokpal has disposed of a complaint on corruption charges against former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, declaring it beyond its jurisdiction. An official order informed that on October 18, 2024, a complaint was filed against the then CJI Chandrachud with allegations of benefiting and protecting a leader and a political party. Chandrachud retired on November 10, 2024.

The Lokpal has clarified in its order whether a sitting Chief Justice or a judge of the Supreme Court comes under its jurisdiction under Section 14 of the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act. Subsequently, he decided to avoid discussing in detail the various allegations made in the complaint.

“We consider this complaint to be without jurisdiction,” the order said. Lokpal Chairman Justice A. The order issued by M. Khanwilkar and other members also said that the complainant is free to pursue other remedies under law.

It has been mentioned in the order that various provisions have been examined under Section 14 of the Lokpal Act. It has been clarified that judges cannot be placed under the jurisdiction of Lokpal. Concluding that the Supreme Court of India is not established by an ‘Act of Parliament’, the Lokpal said that for this reason no action can be taken against CJI Chandrachud or any other judge of the Supreme Court.
