Political temperature has risen in the country amid speculations about delimitation and new Parliament session. The Congress Party has once again adopted a tough stance and demanded that the number of Lok Sabha seats be frozen at the existing 543 seats for the next 25 years. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written a detailed letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard, in which it has been strongly advocated for extensive discussions with all political parties on the issue of delimitation and convening of an all-party meeting.

Women’s reservation should be implemented from 2029 elections

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has clarified in his letter that one-third i.e. 33 percent reservation for women should be implemented in the current 543 seats from the next general elections to be held in the year 2029. The party believes that for this there is no need to increase the existing strength of the Parliament in any way. The same policy was also approved in the recent meeting of the Congress Working Committee, which has now been officially raised before the Prime Minister.

Politics heated up regarding special session and delimitation bill

This entire incident has come to light after the statement of Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in which he had indicated that a special session of Parliament can be called to pass the Delimitation Bill. Due to Parliament not being prorogued despite the end of the monsoon session, discussions have intensified in the political circles that the government may take some big step soon. Sensing these possible political movements, Congress has instructed the government not to try to impose the bill without discussion.

Political parties and states get adequate time for study

Mallikarjun Kharge, in his letter, has demanded from the government that all political parties and state governments should get adequate time to study the proposals and documents related to delimitation. He urged that instead of showing haste on this very sensitive and far-reaching issue, an all-party meeting should be called so that a transparent and unanimous decision can be taken while protecting the interests of all parts of the country.
