Lok Sabha elections: Contest between BJP and Congress on Ranchi parliamentary seat

Ranchi, March 6 (HS). Ranchi Lok Sabha seat has been created by combining parts of Seraikela, Kharsawan and Ranchi districts. It is also called the city of waterfalls. The area is known for being the hometown of former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The capital Ranchi has been the main center of politics since the time of United Bihar. There is a tough contest between Congress and BJP on this seat of Ranchi.

This is a seat on which JMM, which is in power in the state, has never been able to win. BJP has been winning from here in the last two elections. Six assembly seats (Ichhagarh, Silli, Khijri, Ranchi, Hatia, Kanke) come under Ranchi Lok Sabha seat. In this, Kanke is reserved for Scheduled Caste and Khijri is reserved for Scheduled Tribe.

political background

At the time of the country's first Lok Sabha elections, Ranchi parliamentary constituency was not like it is today. At that time Ranchi was divided into three Lok Sabha constituencies. Ranchi North East, Ranchi West and Palamu-Hazaribagh-Ranchi Lok Sabha seats. Since then, Indian National Congress has had the maximum dominance on Ranchi Lok Sabha seat, but in the last few elections, BJP has reduced this dominance of Congress and BJP is winning this seat in its name.

In 1952, the Indian National Congress won the Ranchi North East seat. Congress Party's Abdul Ibrahim won with 32.6 percent votes while Socialist Party got 24.01 percent votes, Chhota Nagpur Santhal Pargana Janata Party got 18 percent votes and Marxist group's Forward Bloc got 11.6 percent votes. In the 1952 Lok Sabha election, Jharkhand Party won the Ranchi West seat, which was won by Jaipal Singh, while in 1952, the Indian National Congress won the 3rd Lok Sabha seat, Ranchi, Palamu Hazaribagh Ranchi Lok Sabha seat, which was won by Jethan Singh Kherwar. He got a total of 20.7 percent votes while Jharkhand Party got 15.9 percent and Chota Nagpur Santhal Pargana Janata Party got 11.02 percent votes.

In the 1957 Lok Sabha elections, a Lok Sabha constituency was carved out of Ranchi. Now Ranchi had two Lok Sabha constituencies, Ranchi East and Ranchi West. In the 1957 Lok Sabha elections, Jharkhand Party candidate MR Masani won from Ranchi East by getting 34.6 percent votes, while Mohammad Ibrahim Ansari of the Indian National Congress got 32.6 percent votes. Jaipal Singh of Jharkhand Party once again won from Ranchi West seat and got 60.3 percent votes. The Indian National Congress had received 25.2 percent of the votes.

Even in 1962, there used to be two Lok Sabha constituencies in Ranchi. Here, Jaipal Singh of Jharkhand Party won from Ranchi West while Joseph Tigga of Swatantra Party stood second. Jaipal Singh got 48.9 percent votes while Joseph Tigga of Swatantra Party got 24.8 percent votes. The Indian National Congress candidate got 19.3 percent votes. In 1962, Prashant Kumar Ghosh won from Ranchi East by getting 30.4 percent votes while Ibrahim Ansari of Indian National Congress got 26.9 percent and Arjun Agarwal of Jharkhand Party got 20.7 percent votes. They stood second and third.

Ranchi became a separate Lok Sabha constituency in 1967 and Prashant Kumar Ghosh, the winner of the Ranchi East seat in 1962, was absorbed into the party by the Indian National Congress. In the 1967 Lok Sabha elections, Prashant Kumar Ghosh got 18.3 percent votes while Bharatiya Jana Sangh got 16 percent votes. In this way Prashant Kumar Ghosh once again won.

Congress scored a hat-trick of victories in 1980

In the 1971 Lok Sabha elections, the Indian National Congress won from Ranchi and once again Prashant Kumar Ghosh won from this seat. This time Prashant Kumar Ghosh got 41.9 percent votes. While Rudra Pratap Sarangi of Bharatiya Jana Sangh got 33.30 percent votes, other political parties could not even take the vote percentage into double digits. In 1977, Congress fielded Shiv Prasad Sahu from Ranchi Lok Sabha seat.

Congress had fielded Shiv Prasad Sahu in place of two-time winner Prashant Kumar Ghosh and Congress lost this seat. In 1977, Bharatiya Lok Dal won the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat. Ravindra Verma of Bharatiya Lok Dal won with 45.4 percent votes while Shiv Prasad Sahu of Indian National Congress got 24.7 percent votes. In the 1980 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress Party once again captured the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat and Shivprasad Sahu won this seat. This time Shiv Prasad Sahu got 37.7 percent votes, while Janata Party's Shivkumar Singh got 24.2 percent votes.

In the 1984 Lok Sabha elections, Congress once again won this seat. Shiv Prasad Sahu won the Lok Sabha elections again from here. This time he got a total of 47.2 percent votes while Bharatiya Janata Party's Ram Tahal Choudhary got 16 percent votes. Janata Party candidate Subodh Kant Sahay got 15.1 percent votes.

In the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, this seat once again went out of the hands of the Congress Party and this time Janata Dal candidate Subodh Kant Sahay won this seat. He got 34.3 percent votes while BJP's Ram Tahal Choudhary got 31.2 percent and Indian National Congress's Shiv Prasad Sahu got 26.7 percent votes.

BJP won for the first time in 1991

BJP won the Ranchi seat for the first time in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. This time BJP's Ramtahal Chaudhary got 47.6 percent votes, due to which he emerged victorious whereas Janata Dal did not give ticket to Subodh Kant Sahay, who had won from this seat in 1989. Subodh Kant Sahay contested the elections from Jharkhand Party and stood fourth. Janata Dal had made Avadhesh Kumar Singh its candidate, who got 22 percent votes.

In the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, BJP once again captured the Ranchi seat. This time also BJP's Ramtahal Chaudhary was victorious, getting 35.02 percent votes. This time the Congress party had changed its candidate and made Keshav Mahato Kamlesh its candidate. Indian National Congress got 28.8 percent votes while Janata Dal got 25.9 percent votes. In the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Ramtal Choudhary once again won from Ranchi seat. He got a total of 57.2 percent votes while Keshav Mahato Kamlesh of the Indian National Congress got 36.6 percent votes.

In the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, BJP again captured the Ranchi seat. Ramtahal Chaudhary once again won from Ranchi seat and this time he got 65 percent votes. Indian National Congress, changing its candidate, had fielded KK Tiwari from this seat, but KK Tiwari got a total of 23.7 percent votes.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, after Jharkhand became a state, the first Lok Sabha elections were held on Ranchi seat and this time, Ramtahal Choudhary, who was MP from Ranchi for four consecutive terms, had to face defeat. Indian National Congress made Subodh Kant Sahay its candidate and Subodh Kant Sahay won by getting 40.8 percent votes. BJP's Ramtahal Chaudhary got 38.6 percent votes while Bandhu Tirkey, who contested as an independent, got 7.5 percent votes.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections also, Subodhkant Sahay of the Indian National Congress won the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Subodh Kant Sahay got 42.9 percent votes while BJP's Ramtal Choudhary got 41 percent votes.

BJP won in 2014 in Modi wave

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP once again captured the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat and this time Ramtahal Chaudhary got 42.7 percent votes while Subodh Kant Sahay of Indian National Congress got 23.8 percent votes. AJSU Party President Sudesh Kumar Mahato, who contested the elections from Ranchi, got 13.6 percent votes. Amitabh Chaudhary of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha got 6.5 percent votes while Bandhu Tirkey, who contested from All India Trimul Congress Party, got a total of 4.4 percent votes.

Modi's magic was visible again in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, this time BJP did not give ticket from Ranchi to Ramtahal Chaudhary, who had led BJP to victory from Ranchi Lok Sabha seat five times. BJP fielded Sanjay Seth from Ranchi Lok Sabha seat. Angered by this, Ramtahal Chaudhary contested the elections as an independent candidate. However, BJP candidate Sanjay Seth got a total of 57.30 percent votes while Indian National Congress' Subodh Kant Sahay got 34.3 percent votes. Ramtahal Choudhary, who contested as an independent candidate from Ranchi, could get only 2.4 percent votes.

This time again BJP expressed confidence in Sanjay Seth and has given him the ticket again. It will be interesting to see whether Sanjay Seth wins this political wrestling match or not.
