Lok Sabha elections: 60.09 percent voting in fifth phase

New Delhi, May 21 (HS). The fifth phase of voting in the Lok Sabha was completed peacefully today amid some sporadic incidents. According to the data released till 11.30 pm, the voting percentage for 49 seats in this phase was 60.09 percent.

Voting started at 7 am and continued till 6 pm. However, even after 6 o'clock, long queues were seen at many places and voting continued. Voting took place today in many parts of 08 states. Braving the hot weather, voters came out of their homes in large numbers.

Voting in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir was completely peaceful with 54.49% turnout till 7.45 pm, the highest turnout in 35 years. Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are the states/UTs where elections were held in this phase. A total of 695 candidates are in the electoral fray.

If we talk about state wise figures, it is 54.85 percent in Bihar, 56.73 percent in Jammu and Kashmir, 63.07 percent in Jharkhand, 69.62 percent in Ladakh, 54.29 percent in Maharashtra, 67.59 percent in Odisha, 57.79 percent in Uttar Pradesh and 74.65 percent in West Bengal. Voting has taken place.

Voting was conducted smoothly and peacefully in all constituencies. The Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, kept a close watch on each and every aspect of the voting process during the day and issued necessary guidelines. Stringent security measures were put in place to create a conducive environment for voters to cast their votes without any fear or intimidation. The weather was largely normal except for hot conditions in isolated areas.

The trend of urban apathy continued in various urban cities like Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Lucknow. As seen in the last general elections 2019. In Mumbai, celebrities and common citizens waited patiently for their turn to cast their votes and proudly displayed their inked fingers.

With the conclusion of the fifth phase, voting for the General Elections 2024 has now been completed in 25 States/Union Territories and 428 Lok Sabha. Voting in the general elections has also been completed for 63 assembly seats of the state assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha State Assembly. The next phase (6th phase) of voting is scheduled on May 25 in 58 Lok Sabha constituencies (including the postponed voting in Anantnag-Rajouri PC) in 8 states/UTs.
