Kolkata, 18 November (Hinsht). The West Bengal government has submitted a list of seven IPS officers to the Supreme Court in the case of threatening Abhishek Banerjee’s daughter. Among these officers, five are women, whose native place is outside Bengal.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed that a list of seven IPS officers of Bengal cadre, out of which at least five would be women and their residence outside Bengal, be presented for investigation of the case. Following this order, the state government presented the list on Monday.
Some time ago, during a rally against the RG Kar Hospital scandal, a case of objectionable remarks against the minor daughter of Abhishek Banerjee came to light. In this case, Rebecca Khatoon Molla and Rama Das of Diamond Harbor were arrested by the police in September. It is alleged that the police misbehaved with the accused during the arrest.
The accused women filed a petition in the High Court regarding the police action, in which the policemen were accused of physical abuse. In this case, first the single bench and then the division bench ordered a CBI investigation. But the state government challenged this order in the Supreme Court, where an interim stay order was granted.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court asked the lawyers of the state government why there was a delay in filing the counter affidavit. The lawyers asked for six weeks’ time for this, which was rejected by the court and gave only seven days to file the reply. Now the next hearing of this case will be on November 25.
