Lifting of restrictions will open a new chapter of nuclear cooperation

PM Narendra Modi Joe Biden 17362

An important announcement has come amid deepening relations between India and America. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who is visiting India, has said that the sanctions imposed on India after the Pokhran nuclear test of 1998 will now be removed. This announcement can prove to be a historic step for India-US cooperation. This step will also ease the way for a nuclear deal between the two countries in future.

The story of sanctions after the Pokhran test of 1998

In May 1998, India conducted nuclear tests in Pokhran. This test created a stir globally, especially the US, which took a tough stance on it and banned many civilian nuclear companies of India. These sanctions were hampering any kind of agreement in the field of nuclear energy between the two countries.

Recently, the US had also imposed sanctions on some nuclear companies of Pakistan, claiming that Pakistan was working on a missile technology that could directly target the US. In response, Pakistan rejected these allegations and pointed out to India that it has to face a nuclear powered neighbor, due to which this step is unjust.

Jake Sullivan’s statement: ‘No more obstacles’

Jake Sullivan said during an event organized at IIT Delhi on Monday,
“I announce that the United States is taking necessary steps to lift sanctions on Indian nuclear companies. These sanctions were blocking the nuclear deal between the two countries for almost 25 years. “Now we will end this obstacle and open up new opportunities.”

Sullivan also said that this step will correct the mistakes of the past and will give new impetus to technical and scientific cooperation between India and America.

Indian companies will get big benefits

The removal of restrictions will open new avenues of cooperation for Indian and American companies. Those institutions include:

  • Bhabha Atomic Research Center
  • Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research
  • Indian Rare Earths
  • nuclear reactors

This step will strengthen India’s technical and scientific sector. Now Indian companies will be able to work with America in semiconductor technology and other advanced technological areas.

Blueprint for future cooperation

On this occasion, Sullivan also pointed towards the partnership on semiconductor technology between India and America. He said that India will be the first country with which America will work on this technology. This cooperation will be helpful in dealing with the upcoming challenges for both the countries.

New turn in India-US relations

The decision by America to lift the ban will further strengthen India-US relations. This step will bring the two countries closer not only in the nuclear sector but also in the areas of defence, science, technology, and energy.
