The Union Health Ministry has issued new guidelines on passive euthanasia, i.e. withdrawal of life support from people who are terminally ill and surviving only with life support.
In this matter, in the new guidelines issued by the Health Ministry, doctors have been told that they can take the decision to remove the life support of a patient only after keeping in mind certain conditions. Let us tell you about it in detail.
The decision will be taken on the basis of these four conditions
The new guidelines from the Union Health Ministry mention four conditions based on which doctors can decide whether to withdraw life support from a sick person.
-The first condition is that the patient has been declared brain dead.
-The second condition is that the test should reveal that the patient's disease has reached advanced stage and in such a situation treatment will not be of any benefit.
-The third situation is that the patient or family members refuse to continue life support.
– The fourth and last condition is that the process of removing life support should be as per the guidelines set by the Supreme Court.
Incurable disease has also been mentioned in the draft
Terminal illness has also been mentioned in the new guidelines for passive euthanasia issued by the Health Ministry. Basically, terminal disease is an incurable condition with a high probability of death in the near future. Terminal illness also includes severe brain injuries that do not improve for 72 hours or more.
According to the new guidelines, many patients in ICUs are seriously ill who are unlikely to benefit from life-saving treatment.
What did the Indian Medical Association say?
According to a report, Dr. RV Ashokan, President of the Indian Medical Association, said on this new guideline that these guidelines will bring doctors under the ambit of legal scrutiny and this will increase the stress on them.
He further said that Dr. Such clinical decisions are always taken in good faith. He says that the doctors explain the situation thoroughly to the patient's family members and take any decision only after examining every aspect.
