Tamil Nadu Weather: Northeast Monsoon has become active in the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, due to which heavy rains are continuing. There has been heavy to very heavy rain in these areas for the past several days, due to which life has become completely disrupted. There is waterlogging on roads and low lying areas in many districts. The Meteorological Department has also issued a rain alert for the coming days, due to which people need to be careful.

Warning of heavy rain for three days

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in Tamil Nadu from December 17 to December 19. During this period, people have been advised to remain alert and stay in safe places. Fishermen have been warned not to go into the sea, so that any untoward incident can be avoided.

Special alert for fishermen

The Meteorological Department has strictly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in the west-central Arabian Sea and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu on December 17 and 18. In particular, there is a possibility of severe weather in the Comorin Coast and Gulf of Mannar areas. Sea travel can prove dangerous due to strong winds and high waves, hence an alert has been issued to fishermen.

Heavy rain is forecast in the following districts of Tamil Nadu on 16 December:

  • pudukkottai
  • Thanjavur
  • Thiruvarur
  • Nagapattinam
  • Mayiladuthurai
  • karaikal

Heavy rains in these districts may result in waterlogging, affecting traffic and daily life. The local administration has appealed to the people to be cautious.

Heavy rainfall is likely across Tamil Nadu, with heavy rainfall expected especially over Cuddalore and Villupuram districts.

19 December:

There is a warning of heavy to very heavy rain in many districts of Tamil Nadu as well as Kerala.

Life affected due to heavy rain

Due to continuous heavy rains, there is water logging and traffic disruption at many places in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. People are facing a lot of problems due to water logging in low-lying areas. The administration has advised people to stay safe at home and not go out unnecessarily.
