New Delhi, September 25 (HS). Delhi's Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Wednesday wrote a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urging to link vehicle insurance premium to the number of traffic violations registered against the vehicle.
If this proposal of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena is implemented, then the more you break traffic rules, the more expensive will be the insurance premium of your vehicle. The Lieutenant Governor requested the Union Finance Minister to consider the proposal of a level insurance premium system.
According to this proposal written by Saxena to the Finance Minister, vehicles violating speed, careless driving or other traffic rules may have to pay higher premium. The Lieutenant Governor has written in the letter that this step will encourage safe driving. Along with this, it will promote the culture of responsible driving on the roads. The Lieutenant Governor has mentioned the road accident in Delhi in support of the letter.
It is noteworthy that according to the data of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), more than 4.37 lakh road accidents have been recorded in India in 2022. About 1.55 lakh people have died in these accidents.
According to a 2023 report by the Delhi Traffic Police, 60 per cent of fatal road accidents involved vehicles that had previously been fined for traffic violations, mainly speeding and red-light jumping.
