Kolkata, 05 November (HS). The launch of the first and second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) took place at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) on Tuesday. On this occasion, Governor of West Bengal Dr. CV Anand Bose participated as the chief guest. Senior officers of the Indian Navy and many other officers of GRSE were also present.

In fact, the contract between the Defense Ministry and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) Goa for the construction of seven ships and with GRSE Kolkata for the construction of four ships was signed in March 2023. Under this contract, a total of 11 NGOPVs are being built for the Indian Navy. The NGOPV weighs approximately three thousand tonnes, which will prove useful for coastal security, surveillance, search and rescue operations, protection of offshore assets and anti-piracy missions.

With this launching, the Indian Navy has achieved another important achievement in the field of indigenous shipbuilding. This is an important step towards realizing the vision of 'Self-reliant India' and 'Make in India'.
