Last tribute paid to former minister Hafiz Alam Sairani in the Assembly

Kolkata, 29 October (Hindustan Reporter). The mortal remains of former state minister and senior Congress leader Hafiz Alam Sairani was brought to the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday. Here Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee and opposition leader Shubhendu Adhikari paid their last tribute to him. Other MLAs were also present with him.

Hafiz Alam Sairani, who was battling lung cancer for a long time, died on Monday. Two weeks ago, he was admitted to a hospital located in Bypass due to being seriously ill. The investigation there revealed lung cancer. He was shifted to SSKM hospital as his condition deteriorated on Sunday.

Hafiz, who was earlier the leader of the Forward Bloc, joined the Congress in 2022. On Tuesday, his mortal remains were brought to the Assembly from the Provincial Congress Office, Vidhan Bhavan. During this his supporters and workers were present. His nephew and former MLA from Gowalpokhar area of ​​North Dinajpur district, Ali Imran Ramaj (Victor) also accompanied him. According to the information, his mortal remains will be taken to North Dinajpur on Tuesday itself, where his last rites are likely to take place in the evening.

Hafiz Alam Sairani was a prominent leader of North Dinajpur. His brother Ramzan Ali was the MLA of Gowalpokhar, after whose assassination Hafiz won the by-election in 1994. After winning again in the 1996 assembly elections, he became a minister and held the relief and cooperative portfolios until 2006. In the 2006 elections, he had to face defeat from Congress candidate Dipa Dasmunshi. After this his nephew Victor won the election on the Forward Bloc ticket and represented the area. In 2022, both Hafiz and Imran left the Forward Bloc and joined Congress. In 2023, Hafiz was appointed to the post of co-vice president of the provincial Congress.

Expressing condolences on his demise, Provincial Congress President Subhankar Sarkar said, “Hafiz Alam Sairani's contribution to parliamentary politics and progressive work will always be remembered.”
