Landslides and floods cause massive devastation in Indonesia, 19 people dead, seven missing

Landslides and floods have caused widespread devastation in Indonesia, with at least 19 people killed and seven others missing after torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra. Officials gave this information on Sunday. Donny Yusrizal, head of the local disaster management agency, said tons of soil, rocks and uprooted trees rolled down a mountain and into a river late Friday night.

He noted that several banks broke in the Pesisir Selatan district of West Sumatra province, causing flooding in mountain villages. According to information received from Yusri Water, the death toll in this disaster has reached 19.

At least two villagers were injured in the flash floods and rescue workers were searching for seven people who are reportedly still missing, the agency said in a statement. The statement said 14 houses were razed to the ground due to floods and landslides and more than 80,000 people were moved to temporary government shelters. Additionally, the roofs of about 20,000 houses in nine districts and cities in West Sumatra province were flooded.

Tons of soil, rocks and uprooted trees rolled down a mountain late Friday and reached a river, bursting its banks, said Donny Yusrizal, head of the local disaster management agency. Yusrizal said that as of Saturday, rescue workers had recovered seven bodies from the worst-hit village, Koto XI Tarusan, and three more from two neighboring villages.

The agency said on Sunday that rescue workers recovered six bodies in Pasisir Selatan and three in the neighboring district of Padang Pariaman, bringing the death toll to 19. At least two villagers were injured in the flash flood and rescue workers are searching for seven. The men are reportedly still missing, the agency said in a statement.
