Wayanad Landslide: On Tuesday morning (30 July), hundreds of houses were buried in Noolpuja, Mundakkai, Attammal and Churalmala villages after torrential rains in Wayanad, the paradise of South India. 143 people died in this natural disaster while more than 150 people were injured. Also, hundreds of people are buried under the mountain debris. Many agencies including NDRF and Army have been deployed for rescue work here. However, three landslides within a short period of 4 hours hindered the rescue efforts. Prime Minister Modi reviewed the rescue work and announced compensation to the affected families.
Landslides have wreaked havoc in Wayanad, Kerala, famous for its natural beauty and tea plantations. This is probably the first time such a massive disaster has struck Wayanad. As time passes, more bodies are being recovered from the debris. Drones and dog squads have been called in to search for hundreds of people buried under the debris. A control center has been set up in Calicut under the Para Regiment to monitor rescue operations. At the same time, many people are feared to be stranded in the Chaliyar river due to torrential rains.

The Indian Air Force has also deployed an MI-17 and an ALH Dhruv helicopter to assist the NDRF and the Army in rescue operations. According to sources, more than 400 personnel from all three wings of the Army and agencies including the NDRF have been deployed for relief work. Apart from this, two contingents have been kept on standby in Thiruvananthapuram, which will be immediately airlifted to Wayanad if needed. However, the rescue work is being hampered by continuous rain.
Rescue operations in Churmala in Wayanad had begun early in the morning, but the bridge connecting Mundakai collapsed and a temporary bridge was erected there and rescue operations could be resumed after about 15 hours. More than 150 people have been rescued from this village. However, 45 relief camps have been set up in Wayanad, where more than 3600 people have been shifted. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the entire area has been cleared. The government has announced two days of official mourning. The landslide disaster in Wayanad is heart-wrenching. Kerala Minister Veena George said that a team of the Indian Navy is helping in rescue efforts. A bridge connecting Churmala in Wayanad to the nearest town has also been washed away. About 70 percent of the people in the area have been injured. We are ensuring that people get proper treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and assured all possible help in this time of crisis. He has donated Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 50,000 compensation was announced for the injured. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also expressed deep grief over the accident. He said in a post on Twitter that he has spoken to the Chief Minister of Kerala and the District Collector of Wayanad. He assured that rescue operations are underway. I will speak to the Union Ministers and request them to provide all possible assistance to Wayanad. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rains in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur and Idukki in Kerala on Tuesday. He has advised locals and tourists to be extremely cautious.
