While a terrible railway accident took place in the country today, there is also news of a major landslide. The accident took place near Mepari in Wayanad district of Kerala. Due to heavy rains, cracks appeared in the mountains and heavy debris came down with the water, under which people living in the mountains got buried. So far 24 people have died in this accident. Two children are also among the dead. More than 100 people are still feared to be buried under the debris. Rescue operation is going on.
As soon as he got information about the landslide, Prime Minister Modi called the Chief Minister of Kerala. After reviewing the situation and rescue operation with him, he announced compensation for those killed in the landslide. According to the announcement, the families of those who died in the landslide will be given Rs 2 lakh and the injured will be given Rs 50,000 each.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has confirmed the landslide. NDRF teams are engaged in rescue work. Kannur Defense Security Corps teams are also present at the spot. The landslide accident occurred at around 2 am when people were sleeping. After this, the debris came again at around 4 am. 16 people have been rescued, who have been admitted to the hospital.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself is monitoring the rescue operation. He has directed the district police, administration and hospital officials to cooperate. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Wayanad has been receiving heavy rains for the last 24 hours, which led to the landslide this morning.
As soon as the information about the accident was received, police and administration officials reached the spot. NDRF teams have been deployed for rescue work.
