Jakarta, July 9 (HS). At least 12 people died in the collapse of an illegal gold mine on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island.
The incident was caused by torrential rains, officials said on Monday. About 100 villagers were digging in a gold mine in the remote Bon Bolango area of the province on Sunday when several tonnes of mud fell from the surrounding hills, burying their temporary camp, said Herianto, head of the search and rescue agency in Gorontalo province.
He said that 44 people somehow came out of the debris and some were pulled out alive by the rescuers, including six injured. According to him, rescue workers have found 12 dead bodies, including three women and a four-year-old child, and 48 people are missing. Rescue officer Afifuddin Ilahude said that the rescue operation has been hampered due to heavy rain.
