Lahore most polluted city: Lahore, the cultural center of Pakistan, has been declared the most polluted city in the world. Its air quality index (AQI) is very high at 394. An AKI of more than 150 is generally considered dangerous to health. The main cause of this dangerous smog is stubble burning by farmers as well as industrial emissions, causing cough, breathing problems and eye irritation among city dwellers.
Various measures will be taken to reduce smog levels
To deal with this crisis, the Maryam Nawaz-led Punjab government has launched several campaigns, including artificial rainfall, to reduce smog levels. Additionally, the government has formed an anti-smog squad that will sensitize farmers about the dangers of stubble burning. They will suggest alternative solutions like super seeder for stubble disposal.
Pakistan appeals to India for 'climate diplomacy'
The Environment Department of Punjab has said that it will take eight to ten years to realize significant improvements in this regard. Environmental education has also been introduced in the school curriculum to create awareness about smog. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has called for climate diplomacy with India so that joint efforts can be made to stop stubble burning in both the countries.
The Government of Punjab, Pakistan is committed to tackling this environmental threat and has said that immediate action is necessary to protect public health and the environment.
