Madrid, 20 February (HS). Athletic Bilbao dealt a major blow to Verona's La Liga title hopes with a thrilling 3-2 home win at the San Mamés Stadium on Monday night.
A seventh consecutive home win also gave Bilbao a chance of finishing in the top four. Verona is now six points behind leaders Real Madrid, while Bilbao is fifth, two points behind Atletico Madrid.
Bilbao made a bright start in the match and in the very second minute Alejandro Berenguer scored to put his team ahead 1-0. At half-time, Bilbao led 1-0.
However, four minutes after the intermission, in the 49th minute of the match, Victor Tsygankov scored a goal and equalized the score for Verona.
Alejandro Berenguer scored his second goal in the 56th minute to put Bilbao ahead 2–1. Four minutes later, Iñaki Williams scored to make it 3–1.
15 minutes before the end of the match, Eric García scored the second goal for Verona and the score became 3–2 and in the end this score proved to be decisive.
