Kumbh Mela 2025: Prayagraj is fully prepared for Mahakumbh 2025. Devotees from all over the country and abroad have started coming to this religious city of Uttar Pradesh. The tradition of divine bath in Mahakumbh will start from the day of Poshi Poonam. It is estimated that this time more than 40 crore devotees are going to arrive for the Kumbh bath. Mythological stories say that the Mahakumbh was organized as a result of the search for nectar, but this story is not the only one.

the gods were cursed

Today we are taking a spiritual dip in the sacred nectar stream. It was not so easy to follow his tradition. In fact, what is now proving to be a boon for us was the result of a curse. A curse passed down by the gods that once endangered humanity but over time proved to be a boon for the human community.

This story is in Skanda Purana

There is a curse of a sage behind this entire tradition which is in front of us today as a boon. This tradition emanating from the heavenly world is not only a gift of human qualities, but is also the basis for the education of ethics and morality. This story is described in Skanda Purana. According to which Amravati, the capital of heaven, was full of all pleasures and because of these pleasures its name heaven became meaningful. The gods were victorious in the war between Devasura and Devasura that lasted for many years and hence they were no longer afraid of their enemies.

a great disaster was about to come to heaven

Overall, a pleasing breeze was blowing in heaven, mixed with the fragrance of flowers and new music in every direction. The combination of all these was so beautiful that many times the Gandharvas would leave their songs and start listening to their music. The effect of this was that now the gods gradually abandoned their duties and started living in luxury and their lord Indra became so engrossed in anger that he no longer even knew that he had any responsibility towards the world. He used to listen to new ragas from Gandharvas and enjoyed Somras. This was a harbinger of impending disaster.

When Lord Indra became proud

The reason behind all this was the war between the gods and the demons, in which Devraj Indra was victorious. Although he got victory because of the Trinity (Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh) but Vijay’s ego grew so much that he now thought that there would be no attack. Devguru Brihaspati also had the same concern. She was less worried about future fears but the present danger was that Devraj, engrossed in his passion, was no longer even holding the planetary meetings. Due to this once again the balance of the world started deteriorating.

Sage Durvasa tried to convince Indradev

The Saptarishis expressed concern over this but due to the recent war, they also did not want to let this peace be broken but after a lot of time had passed, now they started worrying. If the conjunction of the planets had not occurred, the entire alignment of the stars could have stopped. The balance may get disturbed. Sage Durvasa went to Devloka as a representative of the seven sages to request Devraj Indra to call a meeting to address this concern.

On the way he met Narad Muni

Sage Durvasa was aware of Indra’s pride but he was thinking that after explaining the crisis to him, he would understand the situation. When sage Durvasa went to convince Devraj, he met Devarshi Narad on the way. Devarshi Nagar had a garland of Baijayanti flowers in her hand, the fragrance of which permeated all the three worlds and was so divine that it mesmerized the wearer. Narada Muni considered his work great and gifted him garlands. Sage Durvasa kept this garland with himself and thought that he would donate it to Devraj Indra.

The sage was humiliated in heaven

The sage thought that even if Indra did not understand him, this rare gift would force him to listen to him. Thinking these things, the sage reached Devlok. Durvasa, who had reached Devlok, started suspecting impropriety from the very beginning. He understood that pride had awakened in Indra’s mind. Even after being informed by the gatekeeper, Indra did not arrive to take him to the meeting with welcome. The sage considered this matter very small and removed it from his thoughts.

The sages got angry on Devraj Indra

After this, when he reached the meeting hall quite late, there was an atmosphere of debauchery all around. Devraj duly bowed to sage Durvasa. Nevertheless the sage raised his hand in blessing and gifted him the garland he had brought. Indra smiled and smelled the flowers of that garland and asked, did Rishivar remember any fragrance here? Saying this, Indra proudly put the garland around the elephant’s neck and the elephant took it off its neck and crushed it under its feet. Seeing the insult to his gift, Maharishi Durvasa became very angry.

Sage Durvasa cursed the gods

Durvasa who is known as an extremely angry sage. He had been suppressing his anger till now, but this kind of behavior of Indra and his continuous mistakes caused the volcano of his anger to burst. He roared loudly in anger and said, ‘In the arrogance of victory, opulence and wealth, you have forgotten morality. It will be taken away from you. Even this heaven will be taken away from you and you will become devoid of wealth.’

Due to curse the world became devoid of Lakshmi

Due to the curse of Maharishi Durvasa, all the opulence of Indra was destroyed. Goddess Lakshmi disappeared from the world. They drowned in the sea and all three people drowned in dire poverty and destitution. Lakshmiless Indra was again attacked by demons. Indra was defeated in the battle by Bali, the king of demons. Along with this, many herbs also disappeared from the world.

Then the churning of the ocean took place, as a result of which the plan of Maha Kumbh was made.

King Bali took control over all three worlds. The disappointed gods realized their mistake and when they reached Sri Hari Vishnu, Lord Vishnu told them the way to churn the ocean and from this churning came out nectar, the splash of which fell on four pilgrimages in the country. One of these is Prayagraj, where this Mahakumbh-2025 is being organized.
