Kathmandu, July 15 (HS). CPN-UML party president KP Sharma Oli will take oath as Prime Minister in Nepal today. He was appointed the country's Prime Minister for the fourth time of the new coalition government yesterday. 72-year-old Oli is considered pro-China. Oli will replace Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda. CPN-Maoist Center President Prachanda lost the trust vote in the House of Representatives on Friday. After this, the process of formation of a new government began according to Article 76 (2) of the Constitution.
President Ramchandra Paudel appointed Oli as the new Prime Minister of the Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and Nepali Congress coalition government. Oli became the Prime Minister with the support of the Nepali Congress, the largest party in Parliament. Oli's swearing-in ceremony will be held at 11 am today at Shital Niwas, the main building of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Earlier on Friday night, Oli staked claim to form the government with the support of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and submitted a letter of support signed by 165 members of the House of Representatives. It had the signatures of 77 members from his party and 88 members from the Nepali Congress.
Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-UML Chairman Oli went ahead and signed a seven-point agreement on July 1 to form a new coalition government. Both leaders have agreed that the remaining term of the Prime Minister will be shared between them on a rotational basis. Nepal is due to hold general elections in 2027. Other political parties including the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, Janmat Party and Nagrik Unmukti Party are also likely to join the government in the new coalition government.
Oli served as Prime Minister from 11 October 2015 to 3 August 2016. During this period, Kathmandu's relations with New Delhi remained tense. After this, he was again the Prime Minister from 5 February 2018 to 13 May 2021. Even after this, he remained in office from 13 May 2021 to 13 July 2021 due to the then President Bidya Devi Bhandari. Later, the Supreme Court of Nepal ruled that Oli's continuation as Prime Minister is unconstitutional. It is noteworthy that Nepal has been facing political turmoil for a long time. After the implementation of the republican system, the citizens of Nepal have seen 14 governments in the last 16 years.
