Doctors strike on 17 August: Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced on Thursday (August 15) night that health services across the country will remain closed for 24 hours on August 17. IMA says a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped, murdered and Independence Day Doctors are going on strike on 17 August in protest against the mistreatment of protesting doctors on the eve of the strike. Its effect is going to be seen on medical services.

In a statement issued by the IMA, it has been said that the doctors of modern medicine will not provide their services from 6 am on August 17 to 6 am on August 18. Meanwhile, only essential services will be provided to the patients. There is a lot of anger among the people regarding the rape-murder case in Kolkata Medical College. At present, strong protests are being seen in the capital of West Bengal. A large number of women took to the streets and demanded justice for the victim.

According to news agency ANI, IMA has issued a press statement. It said, “In view of the brutal crime at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and the hooliganism committed against the protesting students on the eve of Independence Day, the Indian Medical Association has decided to close the services of modern medical practitioners for 24 hours from 6 am on Saturday, 17 August to 6 am on Sunday, 18 August.

The IMA said, “All essential services will continue. The injured will be treated. Regular OPDs will not function and elective surgeries will not be performed. The strike is applicable to all areas where modern medicine doctors provide their services.” The country needs sympathy on the issue of doctors.

It is noteworthy that on August 9, the body of a female trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The woman was raped and then brutally murdered. A civic volunteer was arrested the very next day in this entire case. The investigation of the case has been handed over to the CBI, which has called five doctors for questioning on Thursday.
