Kolkata doctor rape murder case: In protest against the rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, protests began at many places in the country at 11:55 pm on Thursday to 'regain the night' i.e. to take control of the night. This protest was named the midnight demonstration for women's freedom. The protest held in Kolkata soon turned violent.
Vandalism inside the hospital
By midnight, the situation worsened to such an extent that the angry mob broke the barricades and entered the emergency ward of the hospital. Hardly anything was left inside the emergency ward. All the medical equipment, from windows to beds, were broken. The mob also broke the police barracks inside the hospital. First, slogans were raised outside the hospital demanding justice and within no time, thousands of people gathered there.
Policemen were also injured
The mob suddenly attacked the emergency building where the female doctor was raped and murdered. Many evidences were hidden in every corner of this building. But the angry mob demolished the building late at night. To disperse the angry mob, the police resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells. Meanwhile, some policemen have also been injured.
In this case, Kolkata Police says that a crowd of 40 people vandalised the medical college after protesting. These people also committed violence in the hospital. Meanwhile, police vehicles and some two-wheelers were also damaged. Lathicharge and tear gas shells had to be used to control the crowd.
Statement of Kolkata Police Commissioner
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said, 'The number of policemen deployed in the hospital was less due to which the angry mob could not be controlled. The police resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells to control the mob. 'The police worked with full force in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor, but due to continuous rumours the situation went out of control.'
Vineet Goyal said, 'Whatever happened here is due to a false media campaign, a malicious media campaign against the Kolkata Police. What has the Kolkata Police not done! They have done everything in this regard.' Although we have tried to convince the family, rumours are still being spread. I am very hurt by this perception of the people. 'We never said that there is only one person (accused).' We have said that we are waiting for scientific evidence and it takes time. I cannot arrest a PG student based only on rumours, it is against my conscience, there is a lot of media pressure, clearly what we did is right. Now the CBI is investigating it. Bones were broken, this was done, that was done, false propaganda is being spread which has no scientific evidence.'
Kolkata Police was questioned
Questions are being raised on Kolkata Police that such a big violent protest was going to happen but why did Kolkata Police not get information about it? Apart from this, thousands of people had gathered outside RG Kar Medical College, then why no action was taken on time? Doctors of RG Hospital say that the police has failed to provide them security.
Allegations are being made that Kolkata Police did not investigate but covered it up. The doctor who conducted the post-mortem is saying that it was not rape but gang rape. First the doctor's family was told that the daughter had committed suicide, then they called them to the hospital and made them sit for three hours. Which shows the insensitivity of the administration.
After the doctors' agitation, the principal of the medical college resigned on Monday and within a few hours the Mamata government transferred Principal Sandeep Ghosh to the National Medical College. Then it was asked whether there was any reason behind the haste to show mercy to the principal? There is no trust in the Kolkata Police, which is why yesterday the High Court, while handing over the case to the CBI, said, 'There is every possibility that evidence will be destroyed in the police investigation.'
