Every state government imposes VAT (value added tax) on petrol and diesel at different rates to increase its revenue. Fuel prices are higher in states with higher VAT.
The central government also imposes excise duty on petrol and diesel, this duty is the same in all states. Along with this, the cost of transportation of fuel from the oil depot to the petrol pump also affects the prices. Fuel prices are also higher due to higher transportation costs in remote areas.
Along with this, fluctuations in the prices of crude oil in the international market have a direct impact on the prices of petrol and diesel, due to which the prices of petrol and diesel continue to increase.
The prices of petrol and diesel keep fluctuating continuously. However, fuel prices are generally higher in South Indian states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Apart from this, some northeastern states are also known for high oil prices.
Andhra Pradesh has the highest prices of petrol in the country. Here the price of petrol is Rs 108.46 and the price of diesel is Rs 96.33. Apart from this it is in Telangana, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
