Murmu, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While Narendra Modi served two terms as Gujarat chief minister, Girish Murmu served as general secretary. He was joint secretary of the Home Department when Amit Shah was the Home Minister. To get the support of the tribals, the BJP may make Murmu the chief minister of Odisha.

Talking about other leaders in the contenders for the post of Chief Minister, the names include newly elected MLA from Sambalpur Jaynarayan Mishra, former Odisha BJP president and new MLA from Patnagarh KV Singh Deo, new MLA from Brajrajnagar Suresh Pujari and new MLA from Kendujar. Moham Maji is also in the news. Talking to the media, Jaynarayan Mishra said that a son of Odisha will become the Chief Minister of Odisha. However, the decision on who will be given the crown of Chief Minister in the state will be taken in the meeting of BJP MLAs and it will be approved by the parliamentary board of the party.
