A nuclear power center is under consideration in Kerala, regarding which Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and State Energy Minister K Krishnakutty held a high-level meeting. According to reports, during the talks it was suggested to build a nuclear power center in Kerala.
Apart from this, the electricity demand of Kerala was discussed in the meeting, in which there was talk of exploiting thorium reserves in the state and supplying the electricity generated from it to Kerala. However, Kerala government will have to provide land for this.

Talking about this meeting, Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has said that if the Kerala government gives the land, then the central government is ready to build a nuclear power plant in the state. However, the final decision has not been taken yet, as it involves extensive research and inspection by multiple agencies.

Kerala has requested the Union Minister to underground all overhead power cables in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. Kerala officials say this is necessary to avoid burdening consumers.
Apart from this, Kerala Minister Krishnakutty, in his meeting with the Union Minister, demanded to provide 400 MW power to the state from Talcher Power Plant instead of 180 MW. Kerala has also demanded that the high voltage distribution system of the Power Grid Corporation be declared a national asset and its cost be borne by all states.
