Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order in Delhi. He has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on this issue and has sought time to meet him. Kejriwal has said in his letter that the law and order of Delhi is under the central government, but the situation has become so bad that Delhi is now being called the “capital of crime”.
Increasing graph of crimes in Delhi
Kejriwal said in his letter:
- Delhi tops India’s 19 metro cities in crimes against women.
- Delhi ranks first in murder cases.
- Extortion gangs have become active in the city.
- Schools and airports are receiving bomb threats.
- Drug related crimes have increased by 350% in recent times.
Delhi has become ‘rape and crime capital’: Kejriwal
Citing the recent incidents of broad daylight firing, murder and kidnapping, Kejriwal said that criminals no longer have any fear of the law. He wrote in the letter:
“Under your watch our glorious capital is now being branded with names like ‘rape capital’ and ‘crime capital’.”
He also expressed concern over incidents of school evacuation due to bomb threats and said that this has a deep psychological impact on children and their parents.
Kejriwal said that the mothers and sisters of Delhi are asking:
“Can’t Delhi be safe for us?”
Traders are also working in an environment of fear. Kejriwal appealed to Amit Shah to rise above politics and work on this issue and take necessary steps to improve law and order.
Request to meet the Home Minister
Kejriwal wrote in his letter that:
“I request you to spare your precious time as soon as possible so that I can give you complete information about the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi.”
BJP’s counterattack: Virendra Sachdeva’s statement
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva hit back at Kejriwal’s allegations, saying:
“When a woman MP was being assaulted in your house, why did you not remember law and order?”
Sachdeva alleged that Kejriwal has kept Vaibhav Kumar, found guilty in the incident, with him. They said that:
- Kejriwal gives shelter to criminals.
- Their MLAs collude with gangsters to extort money.
- The real issues of Delhi are electricity, water, broken roads and corruption.
Sachdeva said that Kejriwal is raising questions on law and order to divert attention from these issues.
