Keir Stormer took over as UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak resigned

London, July 5 (HS). After the massive victory of the Labour Party in the UK general election, Keir Starmer took a pledge to remove the 'disappointment prevailing in the hearts' of the countrymen and rebuild the nation after taking charge as the new Prime Minister of the country on Friday. Earlier, the first British Prime Minister of Indian origin Rishi Sunak resigned from the post of Prime Minister after the Conservative Party suffered a crushing defeat in the election.

After a landslide victory in the election, 61-year-old Starmer took charge as the 58th Prime Minister after a ceremonial meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. The Labor Party won 412 seats in the 650-member House of Commons. This number is 211 more than the seats won in the last election in 2019. Sunak's Conservative Party won 121 seats, which is 250 less than the seats won in the last election. The Labor Party's vote percentage was 33.7, while the Conservative Party's vote percentage was 23.7.

“Our country has voted decisively for change, national renewal and a return to politics for public service,” Starmer said in his address outside 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British prime minister.

Störmer said the work ahead was “urgent and we are starting it today”. However, he added it would not be as simple as “flicking a switch”.

He said, “When the gap between the sacrifices made by the people and the service received from political leaders becomes too great, it creates despair in the heart of the nation, it destroys hope, spirit, faith in a better future. We need to move forward together.”

Stormer said the lack of trust can only be overcome by action, not words. He vowed that his government would treat every person in the country with respect.

Sunak, who will take over as UK Prime Minister in October 2022, said he would step down as leader of the Conservative Party, taking 'responsibility' for its defeat in the general election.

He said, “It is your decision that matters. I have seen your anger, your disappointment and I take responsibility for this defeat… After this result, I will step down as party leader, not immediately, but after formal arrangements have been made to select my successor.”

Many of Sunak's famous ministers and MPs and his predecessor Prime Minister Liz Truss' harmful economic policies like the 'mini budget' are being held responsible for the defeat of the Conservative Party.

At the same time, many MPs of Indian origin including Preet Kaur Gill and Tan Dhesi were re-elected in the Labour Party and new faces like Jas Athwal and Kanishka Narayan of Indian origin were also elected to the Parliament. Earlier, Stormer won his seat of Holborn and St Pancras in London by 18,884 votes.
