New Delhi, August 1 (HS). Kavya Kalanithi Maran has demanded the removal of the restriction on the number of foreign players that can be retained. The CEO of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise has requested at least six retention or Right to Match (RTM) options for the IPL franchise ahead of the mega auction. Additionally, she has suggested that foreign players who do not enroll in the mega auction or do not turn up after being bought should be banned.

As per a Cricbuzz report, in a meeting between IPL team owners and BCCI officials on Wednesday, the SRH promoter stressed the need for at least six retentions or alternatively, the same number of RTM options for each franchise.

“We can use it as four retentions and two RTMs, or all six retentions, or all six RTMs and so on. The choice of using retention or RTM should be with the franchise based on the discussion with the player,” he added.

Maran also demanded a ban on players who go back on their commitment and do not turn up after nominating for the auction. SRH were very upset with Vanindu Hasaranga, who withdrew from IPL 2024 citing injury. Many believe that he has come to the auction now only because of the low bid of Rs 1.5 crore. Earlier, his salary with RCB was more than Rs 10 crore.

He said, “After being selected in the auction, if a player does not come to play the season for any reason other than injury, he should be banned.” However, he did not name the Sri Lankan all-rounder.

He said, “Franchises put in a lot of effort to build their combination in the auction. If a player goes for a low amount in the auction, and does not come later, it affects the combination and the balance of the team. There are many examples of foreign players not coming for this reason.”

Maran also expressed her opinion about the reduction in the salary cap for retained players. She wanted the BCCI not to decide how much the retained players will be paid.
