Geneva, March 9 (HS). Former American tennis player Katrina Adams was on Friday honored with the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s 2023 Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) Global Champions Award.
The IOC honored Adams and other continental winners on Friday to mark International Women's Day.
Kenya's Irene Limica, Chile's Marialoretto Gonzalez Jack, Sri Lanka's Jayanti Kuru-Utumpala, France's Aurélie Bresson and Australia's Patrick Johnson are the GEDI continental winners.
As chairman of the US Open from 2015-2018, Adams, chief executive officer, president and chairman of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), launched the Hispanic Initiative, which led to a 15 percent increase in the number of Latino tennis players in the US.
She also promoted the Advantage All initiative when she was vice-president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in 2015–2023. Along with gender-balanced programs, Adams initiated the Women's Leadership Program, balanced men's and women's competitions on the World Tennis Tour, equalized prize money, and the IOC achieved gender parity on the Board of Directors.
