Karnataka demands tax of more than nine crores on Zomato

An officer of the Karnataka Commercial Tax Department has assessed and sent a demand notice of Rs 9.45 crore to food delivery company Zomato Limited. The food company has informed BSE about this.

The company has said that the Karnataka Tax Authority has issued a notice demanding payment of Rs 5.01 crore GST, Rs 3.93 crore interest and Rs 50.19 lakh penalty, a total of Rs 9.45 crore. The tax department issued this demand notice after verifying the company's filed returns and books of accounts for the year 2019-20.

Zomato shares closed at Rs 200.35, up 0.10 per cent from its previous close of Rs 200.15 on June 28. The company said in its response to the tax notice, “We believe our case is strong on the merits. The company will file an appeal against the order before the appropriate authority.”

This is not the first time that a food delivery company has received a demand notice. In the year 2021, Zomato also received a tax notice from the Gurugram authorities. According to media reports at that time, the company had received a notice demanding payment of Rs 11.82 crore including interest and penalty. Nevertheless, the company responded that it would appeal against the assessment order.
