Kapil Dev: Former legendary player Kapil Dev, who won the World Cup for India under his captaincy, has made a special appeal to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Former Indian team player and coach Anshuman Gaekwad is suffering from blood cancer. 71-year-old Gaekwad is undergoing treatment at a hospital in London and Kapil Dev has appealed to the board to help him.
Kapil Dev revealed, My former teammates Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri and Kirti Azad are trying their best to raise funds for Gaikwad's treatment. Kapil said that he is confident that the BCCI will consider the matter and provide financial assistance to Gaikwad, who is the coach of the Indian team.
Kapil Dev's pain spilled out
Kapil said, this is very disappointing. I am sad because I have played a lot with Gaikwad and cannot see him in this condition. There should be no problem for anyone. I know the board will look into him. We are not pressurizing anyone. Any help for Gaikwad should come from the heart. He has been injured by fast bowlers even while playing matches. Now the time has come for us to stand with him. I am sure our cricket fans will not let him fail. They should pray for Gaikwad's recovery.
Kapil advocated the formation of a trust
Kapil said that if the situation does not improve, I am ready to donate my pension as well. He said, “Unfortunately we do not have any system.” It is good to see that the current players have money. Now the support staff also gets a good salary. In our time, the board did not have so much money. Senior players of the past should help but where will they send their support? If a trust is formed then they can send money there, but we do not have any such system. There should be such trust and I think BCCI should do this. They look at the past and present players. If the family allows us, we are ready to donate our pension.
Gaikwad has played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India
Gaikwad's Test career lasted from 1975 to 1987 and he played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. After this, Gaikwad became the coach of the Indian team from 1997 to 1999 and then from 2000. Gaikwad was the coach of the Indian team when Anil Kumble achieved the feat of taking 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan. Under Gaikwad's leadership, India won the home series against Australia 2-1 while the ODI series against New Zealand was drawn.
