Indian cricket’s great off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden decision to retire from international cricket has shocked the entire cricket world. Former Indian captain and World Cup winner Kapil Dev is also surprised by this decision. He believes that Ashwin, who has set many records in Indian cricket, deserved a grand farewell, especially on home soil.
Ashwin announced his retirement after the third Test between India and Australia played in Brisbane. Kapil Dev believes that this decision was sudden and unexpected, which also reflects Ashwin’s disappointment.
Kapil Dev expressed disappointment
Kapil Dev told PTI:
“I was amazed at how one of India’s greatest cricketers decided to leave the game. The fans are disappointed, but I saw disappointment on Ashwin’s face too. He deserved a better send-off than this.”
Kapil believes that Ashwin did not end his career on the right platform. He said that Ashwin should have announced his retirement on home soil in front of the Indian audience.
Desire to know the reason for sudden retirement
Kapil emphasized that Ashwin should have waited a little. He said:
“He could have waited and announced his retirement in India. I want to know the reason for their decision. Ashwin has played 106 Test matches, and his contribution is incomparable. It is difficult to match him in Indian cricket.”
Kapil Dev also expressed hope that BCCI will ensure a grand farewell for Ashwin. He said:
“I am confident that the BCCI will organize a befitting farewell for this match-winner.”
Mention of Ashwin’s bowling art
Praising Ashwin’s bowling, Kapil said that he was a courageous, versatile and clever bowler. Ashwin used to trouble the batsmen with his versatility and ability to adapt to situations quickly.
He said:
“Ashwin was always ready to experiment. This was what made him different from others. Ashwin created a distinct identity for himself in a game dominated by batsmen.”
Regarding Ashwin, Kapil also said that he was the captain’s favorite bowler and was ready to bowl in any situation.
Comparison with Anil Kumble
Kapil Dev described Ashwin as a bowler of the level of Anil Kumble, who could perform brilliantly even with the new ball. He said jokingly:
“Thank God I didn’t have to play with Ashwin. Because of them I could have lost my place.”
