In Sanatan Dharma and Vedic astrology tradition, the change in the zodiac sign of Sun God is celebrated with devotion as Sankranti. In astrology, Sun God is considered to be the factor of soul, king of planets, respect, administrative fame and life force. When the direct deity Bhuvan Bhaskar moves out of his own sign Leo and transits into Virgo owned by Mercury, that specific astronomical and spiritual transition period is known as ‘Kanya Sankranti’. According to religious beliefs, the day of Sankranti is considered very auspicious for pilgrimage, bathing, charity, sun worship and offering to ancestors. The results of Satvik Karma, Gayatri Sadhana and charity done on this day are many times more than on normal days. Kanya Sankranti of the year 2026 is considered extremely fruitful from spiritual and practical point of view due to the amazing confluence of special yogas, which has brought a rare opportunity to end the ongoing financial struggles, family discord and planetary adversities in life.
According to the precise calculations of the Vedic calendar, in the year 2026, the holy festival of Kanya Sankranti will be celebrated with devotion on Thursday, 17th September. On this day, at 07:58 am, Sun God will officially enter Virgo after completing its journey from Leo. According to the almanac analysis, the day of 17th September has become extraordinary because along with the transit of Sun on this day, a very rare and auspicious great coincidence of Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga and Ravi Yoga is being formed. It is mentioned in astrological texts that any auspicious ritual, business venture or charity started in Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga is 100% successful without any hindrance. Along with this, the presence of Ravi Yoga burns the negative energy of the environment and spreads positive waves. On this auspicious date, like every year, the birth anniversary of Lord Vishwakarma, the god of construction, technical knowledge and craftsmanship, will also be celebrated with full rituals in the entire country, due to which the spiritual and worldly impact of this day is doubled.
To do any auspicious work, charity or take bath in the holy river on the day of Sankranti, it is necessary to know the exact time of ‘Punya Kaal’ and ‘Mahapunya Kaal’. It is prescribed in the scriptures that the time immediately after the Sun enters the zodiac is at the highest level of energy. The time calculation for Kanya Sankranti of the year 2026 is as follows:
-
Time period of Mahapunya period: Mahapunya Kaal will start from 07.58 am in the morning and will be effective till 10.01 am. The total time limit of this period will be 2 hours 3 minutes. According to Vedic beliefs, during this period, bathing with Ganga water, Surya Arghya, special resolution and secret donation of gold, copper or food helps in erasing the sins of many births and attaining eternal virtues.
-
Duration of normal virtuous period: For those seekers or householders who are unable to perform the rituals during the Mahapunya Kaal due to some important work or busyness, the auspicious window of the Punya Kaal will start from 07:58 AM in the morning and will remain open till 02:31 PM in the afternoon. Its total duration will be 6 hours 33 minutes. During this entire period, bathing, Brahmin feast, donation of clothes and tarpan done at any time are considered completely as per the scriptures and auspicious.
For those people whose Sun is in a debilitated sign in their horoscope, who are suffering from Rahu-Ketu and are creating eclipse defects, or are facing continuous obstacles in government job and career, the day of Kanya Sankranti is a panacea for getting rid of Sun defects. On this day, during Mahapunya period, take bath with pure water at sunrise. After this, fill a pure copper pot with fresh water. Add Roli, a little pure red sandalwood, a nugget of jaggery, intact and fresh red hibiscus or rose flowers to this water. Now stand facing east and raise both hands above the head and offer Arghya to the Sun God three times. While offering Arghya, see the redness of the rising sun in the middle of the water stream falling from the pot and pronounce the mantra ‘Om Suryay Namah’ or ‘Om Ghrini: Suryay Namah’ clearly 11 or 21 times. Along with this, recite the divine ‘Aditya Hridaya Stotra’ given to Lord Shri Ram by Maharishi Agastya three times. This sadhana gives indomitable courage to the heart, freedom from diseases and highest prestige in the society.
In the scriptures, donations made on the auspicious day of Sankranti are considered poverty eliminators. On the occasion of Kanya Sankranti, one should donate red colored items, wheat, pure local jaggery, copper utensils, red clothes, saffron or ruby to any worthy Brahmin, Sanyasi or very poor person with full devotion as per his capacity. By donating these things, the Sun planet in the horoscope gets immense strength and the relationship with the father becomes sweet.
The day of Sankranti is not only a sacred occasion for worshiping gods but also for getting freedom from ancestral debt. People whose parents or ancestors have passed away should face the south direction on the day of Sankranti and offer water, black sesame, kusha and white flowers in a copper or bronze vessel for their ancestors. By offering Jal Anjali thrice while meditating the ancestors, the ancestors are satisfied and bestow blessings of unbroken good fortune, longevity and financial prosperity on their descendants. Apart from this, on the day of Sankranti, touch the feet of elders, parents and teachers of your house and take their blessings, because service to parents in the form of direct Sun is considered to be the biggest religion to remove all the obstacles.
