The month of Saavan (Shravan) has a special and extremely sacred place in Sanatan Dharma. This entire month is dedicated to the worship of Lord Mahadev, where devotees please Lord Shiva through fasting, special puja and Jalabhishek. There are different references to the beginning of Kanwar Yatra and the first Kanwariya in history in various texts, Puranas and folk tales of Hindu religion. Since there are many ancient stories behind it, instead of considering any one story as a universally accepted historical fact, all of them are seen as highly respected and deeply religious beliefs. According to the story which is most prevalent and popular in all these contexts, Lord Parshuram Is considered to be the world’s first Kanwariya.
According to mythological beliefs, Lord Parashuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Tretayuga, had laid the foundation of this sacred tradition. It is said that he filled a Kanwad with holy Ganga water from the banks of the holy Ganga located at Garhmukteshwar (Hapur) in Uttar Pradesh. After this, he traveled miles on foot from there to visit the historical place situated in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh. ‘Pura Mahadev Temple’ Had arrived. There he performed the divine anointment of Lord Shiva with the sacred Ganga water with utmost rules and devotion. Religious scholars believe that it was only after this step of Parshuram ji that this holy tradition of bringing water in Kanwar and offering it to Shiva formally started among the common people. This is the reason why even today the Pura Mahadev Temple of Western Uttar Pradesh is considered to have a very ancient and special spiritual connection with the Kanwar Yatra.
When will the Kanwar Yatra continue in the year 2026?
According to the religious calendar, the complete period of Kanwar Yatra in the year 2026 Starting from 30th July to 28th August That means it will last for the entire month of Sawan. However, for those devotees and Kanwar Sangha who undertake long distance journeys or participate in the main rituals, The main Kanwar Yatra will continue till 11th August 2026 only..

End of journey: According to Sanatan tradition, most of the Kanwariyas coming from every corner of the country perform Maha-Jalabhishek of Lord Bholenath in the auspicious time of night or early morning of this most holy day (Shivratri).
