Mumbai: In an effort to curb skyrocketing onion prices in North India, the first Onion-Express goods train will be flagged off from Nashik district, Maharashtra's largest onion producing region, to Delhi. The wagons of this train will be filled with enough onion to fill 35 trucks and will be delivered to Delhi on October 20.
An official of the Consumer Affairs Department of the Central Government said that after Delhi, onion supply will also be sent to Lucknow and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh by goods train.
Lasalgaon in Nashik district of Maharashtra is the largest onion trading centre. Therefore, Ministry of Railways has been requested to run Kanda Express goods train in North-East up to New Jalpai Gudi, Diburgarh, New Tinsukia and Angseri in the near future. Because it takes a lot of time to deliver goods by cargo trucks in the hilly areas of the North-East. Goods can be delivered quickly by train. Thus, the early dispatch of onions by train from Maharashtra will also benefit the farmers of Maharashtra.
To maintain stability in onion prices, the central government had purchased 4.7 lakh tonnes of Rabi crop onion and created a buffer stock. After this, he started selling this onion at the price of Rs 35 per kg from September. Till now 92 lakh tonnes of onion has been sold. After the arrival of new red onions, prices have started falling. Onion is sold at Rs 40 per kg in Lasan village. A few days ago, onion prices in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai had reached around Rs 70 per kg. But now the prices are coming down.
