Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday admitted that when he accused Indian government agents of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijhar last year, he had only intelligence information and no concrete evidence.
Testifying before the independent commission investigating foreign interference in federal election processes and democratic institutions, Trudeau claimed Indian diplomats were collecting information on Canadians who were opposed to the Narendra Modi government. These diplomats were passing this information to criminal organizations like the Lawrence Bishnoi gang at the highest levels of the Indian government. The Canadian PM said that he has received intelligence that Canada may have received intelligence from Five Eyes allies. This made it absolutely clear that agents of the Indian government were involved in the murder of Canadian citizens on Canadian soil. Trudeau said this is something his government should have taken very seriously.
It is noteworthy that the Five Eyes include America, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. These countries share intelligence information with each other. It is considered to be the most powerful intelligence network in the world.
Recalling the G20 summit hosted by India in September last year, Trudeau said it was a big moment for India and if we made these allegations public then Canada had a big opportunity to disrupt India's event. He said that but we decided that we will not do this. We decided to continue working behind the scenes to cooperate with India.
Trudeau said that the Indian side asked for evidence and our response was that it is with your security agencies, but the Indian side insisted on evidence. He said that what we had at that time was mainly intelligence and not concrete evidence. So we said let's investigate together. He said that after the conclusion of the G20 summit in Delhi, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed concern over the Nijhar killings. According to Reuters, Trudeau said that India has made a terrible mistake in thinking that it can interfere in Canada's autonomy so aggressively.
Opposition Canadian MPs also involved in foreign interference
Trudeau told the commission that some members of the opposition Conservative Party may have been involved in foreign interference and accused the party of not taking the matter seriously. He said that the investigation has already found evidence that China and other countries have tried to interfere in Canadian politics. Trudeau said that I have the names of many MPs, former MPs and Conservative Party candidates who are involved in this. There is clear intelligence information about them. The survey has shown that the Conservative Party will defeat Trudeau's Liberal Party in the next elections. Elections are scheduled to be held in Canada by the end of October 2025.
