The tenure of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is ending. He will retire on 10 November 2024. In such a situation, he has recommended his successor. The CJI has proposed the name of Justice Khanna in a letter written to the Central Government. In the recommendation sent to the Modi government, he has said that Sanjeev Khanna will be the next Chief Justice of the country.
CJI recommended to the Center
DY Chandrachud will turn 65 on November 10. He assumed the office of Chief Justice of India on 9 November 2022. In a letter written to the Center on behalf of CJI Chandrachud, it has been said that Justice Khanna will take over as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after leaving the post on November 10. If the Central Government accepts the recommendation of CJI Chandrachud, Justice Khanna will be the 51st Chief Justice of India. Justice Khanna's tenure as CJI will be for about 7 months till May 13, 2025. Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court in January 2019. Normally the retirement age of a Supreme Court judge is 65 years.
Who is Justice Sanjeev Khanna?
- Sanjeev Khanna has worked as Senior Standing Counsel in the Income Tax Department for a long time. He was appointed Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi in 2004. He has appeared and argued criminal cases as Additional Public Prosecutor and Amicus Curiae in the Delhi High Court.
- In 2005, he was elevated as Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court and in 2006, he was made a permanent judge.
- As a Judge of the Delhi High Court, he has also held the post of Chairman/In-charge of Delhi Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Center and District Court.
- Justice Sanjeev Khanna was made the Justice of the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019. Justice Khanna is among those judges who were elevated to the Supreme Court before becoming the Chief Justice of any High Court.
- He held the position of Chairman, Supreme Court Legal Services Committee from 17 June 2023 to 25 December 2023 and is currently the Acting Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority and a member of the Governing Council of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.
